Hacker Published Confidential Records Belonging To Six Million Chileans On The Internet
Private details of 6 million Chileans were posted on the internet by a hacker after stealing the information from government websites. The information was obtained by hacking into government and military servers, and was posted on a technology blog. El Mercurio newspaper reports that the data came from computer servers at the education ministry, the military and the electoral service.
The unidentified hacker posted data including names, telephone numbers, addresses and educational details on two websites (IT site FayerWayer and community site ElAntro) after stealing the data from sites run by the state-owned telco, an electoral agency and the Education Ministry. The sensitive data was available for around two hours over the weekend before the authorities stepped in.
In a statement accompanying the purloined data the hacker left a message saying the aim was to demonstrate the poor level of data protection in Chile, says the newspaper which uncovered the story.
Police are investigating the incident. The Chilean personal data breach follows days after every working Italians tax bill was posted online. The Italian revenue deliberately published the data as part of a misconceived plan to reduce tax evasion before realizing the idea was stupid and pulling the information.
